I've never been an A+ grade student. Ever. In these 14 years of schooling, I have never aced a single exam. Not once. And so they called me daft which I didn't have a problem with because I knew exactly who I was and their opinion didn't hold much importance to me.
I knew that it wasn't for the lack of brains why I didn't ace an exam. It was for the lack of trying for I don't quite get the institution of education, in our country. Atleast not at school level, no. I fail to fathom how memorizing facts and theories counts as education. I fail to understand why we are forced into cramming things that are already written in books. That doesn't exactly make sense to me, however barbaric I may sound.
At school, we should be taught to work on our skills. We should be taught to question everything in order to move forward. We should be made to work outside of our comfort zone rather than to circle inside it.
How would memorizing a few formulas help us? The basics, sure. But I don't quite get the point of cramming things that we can already find in the books.
I guess that's what's wrong with our society. We've been taught to spend a lot of time remembering things instead of questioning them and wondering why.
I remember asking my teachers questions about a few theories and the only reply they seemed to have was "You don't have to learn this. It is not in your course so don't worry about it being there in your exam." It was statements like these that left me baffled because I wanted to know what I wanted to know in order to quench my thirst and not because it might be asked in some god forsaken exam.
And so, I do not get the institution of 'education' for it is not educating us to question why a certain thing works the way it does. It is just educating us to learn what has already been printed. It trains us to continue living the rat race instead of teaching us to break the trend. And that, I cannot quite comprehend.

More time studying and less time jerking off on the internet bitching about the education system and you would've been an A+ student. People who write these kind of things are the one's who don't know shit. And don't say you never aced an exam because you never tried or you find memorising formulae (not formulas) useless.Only a loser can say that. Furthermore, how can you discover new things when you don't have the faintest idea of what's been discovered before. Now stop wasting your time writing stupid blogs and READ A BOOK. God!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I said that I haven't aced a single exam, I was using this literary device called 'hyperbole'. You wouldn't know. Kids who usually pay too much attention memorising formulae usually forget to pay attention to things that matter in the real world. Like grammar and vocabulary and literary devices. Tch.
DeleteAlso, I do not question reading or knowing about formulae. I question memorizing whats already been written in the books. Also, einstein's theory. Loser, was it? Haha.
DeleteWell, fact of the matter remains, I write blogs. And you whose existence I was completely oblivious about up until now, reads them and comments on them at 3am. So I mean, the way I see it...I'm on the winning side, buddy

ReplyDeleteThank you so much, man. Honestly appreciate it. :)
DeleteYes, I'll take care of not being repetitive. Thank you
Radhika, I don't know who is Ashish for you, but I hope I can reply him and you in the running. Mate, that is so unfair of you commenting the way you did. You're one with our education system, great. People have all the right to question the system, and that's what Radhika did in a subtle way. There was no outburst anywhere in her article. Respect her views, and you should probably tone down a little. I know you're right in your own way, and so is she. I don't think she's wrong anywhere. Radhika: Great write up! Good choice of words. Aptly put. Just a minor suggestion; don't use a same phrase more than one time in your write ups. Too professional an advice, maybe this can help. EG: Cramming what is already in the books, is repeated twice. Nevertheless, good going.
ReplyDeleteVery well said.Keep growing and learning about life. There is no better school than life itself.
DeleteCool haan. I think there's a definite procedure to be followed for everything. Even If cramming formulas is nt of much importance BT guess at that point in time it helps u reach a particular stage,nd then u can get questions answered.Nt every exam needs like cramming up formulae, school, college yes BT der are also exams like KVPY, NISER. I know they test what's already written in books, BT thatz juz one side of it right? U get into a good institution like IISC nd get all ur questions answered then or maybe get into research line. Well I know life is a school nd we shud keep Learning BT oder aspects are equally important.
ReplyDeletethats a very good point,I appreciate your thinking,we should be taught what we want to fo in life, teachers should motivate us towards our goal rather than telling us to cram and get 100% marks,I don't really understand when will these fools understand that academic result is not the end of the world.
ReplyDeleteRadhika, I truly appreciate your point of view here. I mean, everyone's entitled to one. Just that I too agree that the education system is fucked up but instead of just sitting about and cursing the system and the teachers, what you could've probably done was look up things that you wanted to know. And its not about memorizing. Its just that when you understand things, they come to you naturally and thats how you should work. Im totally with you in the system being faulty however, our only job cant be to JUST criticise the system. You gotta work on yourself and keep yourself busy enough so that these issue dont act as hurdles in your growth. All in all, a lovely piece written
